English PEEL (Sandy Khoo)

Point:
The increasing access to the information on the internet has created more problems than solutions, especially that of a social nature, because there is an increase of accessibility to personal information.

Explanation:
Ever since the advent of internet, people have been trying to communicate through the net effectively. This thus resulted in many social platforms being founded, such as Facebook and Twitter, which aids in social communication. These platforms had indeed bridge many communication gaps even if both persons are at two different ends of the world. It allows people to remain in close contact even if they might not be physically beside each other. This however has posed a social problem, which is cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is verbal or emotional abuse inflicted through the cyber space. Attackers can be anonymous, making victims feel even more vulnerable since they are being attacked by strangers.

Example:
One example of cyber bullying would be Amanda Todd, a teenager from the United States. As an emotional person, she often voice out her sad thoughts through the net. However, she not only did not receive comfort from strangers, but also insults and verbal abuse from those anonymous users. Furthermore, she was duped into showing racy photos of herself, where the man actually shared the pictures to the internet. Those anonymous users therefore seized the chance and sent her more insults. It reached to the point of her cutting herself and at last ended her life. Even after her death, she was still ridiculed with her last photo of her wrist, filled with cuts and the caption,"Are your jokes still funny?"

Link:
Thus, internet has indeed caused more problems than solutions. It has caused a huge social problem and the problem has gotten worse and worse with more people like Amanda Todd, ending their lives because of the careless words of anonymous users. Because of anonymity, people are often careless about their words and  hurt others without knowing, which is a current problem the world is facing.

PEEL (Ryan Lai)

Point:
The increasing access to information on the internet has solved more problems than it has caused, especially for designers.

Explanation:
As information becomes more and more readily available as people start uploading their research and findings onto the internet, people from different locations are able to use this information to help them with their work.

Example:
Many researchers and designers use information readily available on the internet to aid them in their work. Many design companies make their products to cater to the majority of the potential buyers by using information about the target audience, such as the body sizes to make their products more ergonomic.

Link:
Hence, the increasing access to information on the internet has solved more problems than it has caused, as designers can solve more problems as they can better understand the problems of the population and make products that can make life better and improve the quality of life by catering to the population’s requirements.

PEEL Paragraph (Internet) - Darren & Danish

QUESTION: ‘The increasing access to information on the internet has caused as many problems as it has solved.’

POINT: The increasing access to information on the internet has caused more problems as it has solved. This is especially so as work from companies and artists are distributed illegally online.

EXPLANATION: As more and more websites sharing illegal files from companies and artists are being set up, more and more productions are distributed and downloaded illegally. This results in musician artists, companies such as Adobe and even film companies, to lose a large chunk of their profit, as most of it comes from purchases of music or movies from CDs, or through online payment. However, these files are being taken and shared among the rest of the people free of charge, without the need of people having to pay money to the artists or companies.

EXAMPLE: Good examples of illegal websites are Mp3Skull, www.4shared.com and MegaUpload. These websites distributes free music, games and movies illegally. Some shocking statistics from a survey done in 2012 in the USA by InfographicsArchive shows that almost 70% of Online Users interviewed finds nothing wrong with online piracy. 91.5% of files are available for download on Cyberlockers sites (Rapidshare/ MegaUpload) and only 1 out of 10,000 pieces of the most popular content on OpenBitTorrent tracker is non-copyrighted.

LINK BACK/WEIGHING: Though they are some movements by the government and organisations to stop internet online piracy like the shutting down of MegaUpload and Snowleopard.ning, some were shut down permanently, while some were persistent and reappeared again. In fact there are still uncountably many other sites out there continuing the same illegal distribution currently, and are most likely expected to continue for a while as it is currently not easy to stop them. Hence, the increasing access to information on the internet has caused more problems as it has solved.

PEEL Paragraph - Keming

POINT: Increasing access to information on the internet has created more problems than solutions especially in the field of easily accessible information and media where many users exploit to sharing of copyrighted media content that poses as a threat to the record industry's earnings and profits.

EXPLANATION: As the web grows larger and larger due to the increasing number of users, free and widespread access to copyrighted media such as software, movies, music and games reaches out to more users on the internet each day. This easy access to media such as music has influenced and exposed many internet users to more genres of music, therefore serving an educational cause. However, many individuals download such materials for illegal means such as profit-making, which violates the law regarding the reserved rights that the producers who created the copyrighted material have put in place to protect their works. This act of downloading copyrighted media has increasingly caused deep impact on the economy of the record industry, causing damage to artists' and producers' profits and reputations. As a result of this act of sharing copyrighted media, the record industry is only earning an extremely small percentage of the potential amount they could be earning.

EVIDENCE: A good example to illustrate this point is the act of downloading music from the internet. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) released a report which estimates that more than 40 billion songs were illegally downloaded in 2008. This huge figure equates to 95% of all music downloads and is the same percentage of illegal downloads which were made in 2007. the record industry is only making 5% of the money it could potentially be making. This five percent of legitimate/legal sales equates to approximately USD$3.7 billion, which is a pathetic amount compared to the potential USD$74 billion that the industry could be earning if it were not for this widespread sharing of copyright media on the internet. As a result, many musicians and producers earn only a fraction of what they truly deserve for the hard work they put into producing an album. Most users who have the choice between purchasing, for example, a legal and licensed music album on iTunes and a illegally downloaded, "pirated" version of the exact same album, would choose the latter as it is free and there is no need to use their own money.

LINK-BACK/WEIGHING: As such, the easy access to media on the internet is more of a bane than a boon as it allows a majority of internet users to exploit this accessibility to the illegal act of internet piracy, which causes artists and producers to not receive the full amount of their due credit and earnings for their hard work, therefore damaging the economy of the record industry.

Question: 'The increasing access to information on the internet has caused as many problems as it has solved.' Comment

Stand: The increasing access to information on the Internet has created more problems than it has solved.

- Point
Even though an increasing access to information on the Internet is supposedly meant to solve more problems than create problems, it actually creates more problems than solutions. This trend can be especially seen in copyright laws as more people infringe them and use information without obeying the rules of copyright.

- Explanation
As more information is posted and shared online, more people download, use, distribute and copy information. Most of the time, these are done without keeping to the laws of copyright. People do not ask the owners for permission to use these information and some do not even notice if there it is protected by a copyright law. This has led to many copyright law infringements and illegal uses of information. However, given the massiveness and the fact that it is hard to catch all the criminals of copyright infringement, people generally just use the information accessed in any way they want.

- Evidence
A good example to illutstrate this point is MySpace's illegal uploading and distributing of music by artists who signed under the Universal Music Group. MySpace helped it's users to upload their music videos and reediting them so that they can be shared with other users.

- Linkback / Weighing

Therefore, the increasing access to information on the internet is actually more of a scourge than a blessing. Having access to more information on the internet is only plausible when the rules of copyright are fulfilled. When copyright laws are infringed, people actually earn less money. Thus the copyright laws are to be obeyed or one day the information on the internet would be every where and we would not know who is the creator of a masterpiece.

PEEL Saishwar

Stand: The Internet has caused more problems than it has solved.

Point:
The increasing access to information on the internet has caused more problems than it has solved. With increasing access to the internet, many users have a more access to sites that allow illegal downloading or piracy.

Explain:
Many sites are available on the internet that allows users to download applications, music and movies for free. This has caused many artists and producers to face losses in profits. Moreover, all the hard work and money put into making these music and movies goes to waste with people downloading them illegally. This would make it unfair for all those who actually paid money for these media. However, governments are coming up with many ways to stop piracy including the shutdown of file sharing site Megaupload.

Example:
Statistics also show that 42% of media downloaded online are illegal and pirated. With almost 95% of music online illegally put up and 42% of softwares in computers being illegally downloaded, it shows the increasing trend of illegal downloads. Sites such as Piratebay were tried to be shut down numerous times but it keeps reappearing with different domains. This shows that these illegal downloading will not die out easily.

Link:
Hence, this increasing access to information has led much more people to be able to download illegally and not buy media legally. It also affects all those who played a part in the production of this media as they would have money gone to waste.

“ The increasing access to information on the internet
has caused as many problems as it has solved ”

PEEL:

Point
The increasing access to information on the internet has created more solutions that problems in the educational aspect. With more information to refer to, researching and obtaining knowledge is easier and more convenient.

Explanation
As their is more and more articles, statistics and research papers being uploaded online and becoming viewable by anyone, referencing to sources on the internet for learning has become ever so easy. Students can now to turn to the internet when the need to do research arises. The popular term “Google it” coined after it become a norm to use the search engine to access information every time a you have a doubt. The vast amount of information available online and the convenience of getting it makes the information on internet extremely beneficial to education. Though the information on the internet is not always good, since there is also mature content that will not be suitable for students. However, students are equipped with the necessary maturity to know not to access this content.

Example
According to the thesocialskinny.com webpage under the article “100 Social Media, Mobile and Internet Statistics for 2012 (March)” in one day on the internet, enough information is consumed to fill 168 million DVDs. This example shows the great expanse of information available on the internet. With all this information available you can learn anything you want to on the internet.

Link
As such, increasing access to information on the internet is more a boon than it is a bane. Students will benefit from completing their assignments and learning from the expanse of knowledge available on the internet. But they can be distracted and stalled by the harmful information online.

Chelsea (PEEL)

º POINT
The increasing access to information on the internet has roused more problems than solutions, especially in the field of security where the invasion of privacy is highly prominent due to the influx of easily accessible information which has made it difficult to validate its effectiveness.

ºEXPLANATION
As more and more people post their original works online for the purpose of sharing collaborative efforts, we see an incline in the amount of personal data floating around the internet without feasible security measures to protect it from being infringed. Although copy right laws have been implemented to ensure that the owners of intellectual properties have been rightfully credited, the issue of easily accessible information on a wide-spread scale has given birth to a virtual epidemic known as internet piracy - the unlawful reproduction and/or distribution of any copyrighted file that has been circulated over the internet.

ºEVIDENCE
This point is illustrated by the recent news of the FBI taking down an online platform (Megaupload.com) for providing an avenue for the distribution of illegal materials that had been accused of infringement, in 2012. The article is further reinforced by the statement made in parliament in March 2012 by Law Minister K Shanmugam who voiced, I quote, "On an average, it was estimated that there were more than 300,000 cases of illegal downloading each month in Singapore alone - the worst among 15 countries in the region." This reiterates our stand in that although laws exist to protect privacy, they are not efficient in carrying out its intended purpose.

ºLINK-BACK/ WEIGHING
As such, the increasing access to information on the internet is actually more of a bane than a boon. Intellectual properties are only useful to develop creativity and innovation through inspirations from said original works. However, exploitation of accessibility is more evident in the present as enforced laws are begin disregarded. With copy right laws becoming obsolete, the promotion of infringement is the only logical pursuit as its importance remains in detrimental states. However, through the implementation and promotion of open-mindedness in respect to the issue of copy right infringement, the inclination of piracy acts can be thwarted to a significant degree.

PEEL BENEDICT WONG(PRIVACY)

Point
Also, the increasing access to information on the internet has created more problems than solutions especially in the area of the security of one’s privacy on the internet.

Explanation:
Social media platforms has led to a much more effective communication system as many people are able to communication with each other with just the click of a button. As there is a surge in the popularity and usage of social media platforms,it has become much easier to mingle with friends or strangers using the various platforms. In the past,Personal information about an individual is only known to the person’s comrades. However, with the increasing usage of social media platforms, personal information and day to day activities of an individual is now easily accessible by anyone who added or subscribed to the individual on these platforms. This even includes strangers that an individual might not even know.Hence,it has become very dangerous to post private information online as many strangers, some with ill intentions, have easy access to these information. Therefore, these strangers, with access to information like an individual’s home address and cellphone number, might harass and stalk the individual or even carry out actions with ill intentions on that certain individual.Hence,Personal information on the internet is not private and secured anymore as anyone could have access to it. Although the internet has allowed better communication between many people, many user of the internet have lost their privacy as anyone could access the private information of these individuals. Thus there is a huge decrease in the amount of personal information being safeguarded.

Example:
A good example of the lack of privacy of individuals would be from the buzzing social media platform called Facebook. With its 1 billion users during september 2012,Facebook has officially became the most frequently accessed Social media platform with the most users. However,it is reported that many companies who have created applications on Facebook have been obtaining the private information of users to be used to refine their marketing strategies. Also, there have been incidents of stalking cases by random strangers. This is also due to the sharing of personal information on the internet. It  is thus evident that there is a lack of security of the privacy of individuals due to the increasing access of information on the internet.

Link:
Hence, the increasing access of information on the internet has much more disadvantages than advantages. The internet is only useful when it facilitates better communication and help create a cosmopolitan society. However, when there is a breach in one’s personal privacy, there is a possibility that the increasing access to information on the  internet might place an individual in great danger.Hence, the age old method of face to face communication might be a better and safer choice of communication.

PEEL on Socio Cultural - Kuzhalini

Socio-Cultural (More problems than solutions )

Point
The increasing to access information on the internet has created more problems than solutions especially in the area of privacy as many find it hard to keep their information private in the case of groups of individual such as celebrities.

Explanation
More and more paparazzi take pictures and post it online, in order for entertainment websites to gain popularity. Therefore, celebrities almost (Do not make claims like never)  have no privacy and anyone who has internet access would have access to these photos and information. Furthermore, even when the original photos are being taken down, it will still circulate around due to the fact that many can share these photos again and again causing it to be very difficult to permanently take down the picture. On the other hand it has also contributes a lot of fame and popularity that is needed for a celebrity. Most celebrities get their pay check due to the fact that they get their acts and gigs because they are famous. These online websites boosts their popularity more and this is advantage to them.

Evidence
A good example to illustrate this point is the celebrity website TMZ.com. The first hand information about celebrity whereabouts and juicy gossip has made this website popular among many and that has contributed a lot to the privacy issues faced by celebrities. This poses as a problem as sometimes these celebrities' lives are in danger due to easy accessibility of getting information about their whereabouts. An example would be Princess Diana passing away due to the fact that the paparazzi chased her in the car. This is another down side of the increasing access to information on the internet.

Link
As such, increasing access to information on the inter is actually more of a bane than boon. These celebrity websites should only be made available to the public if this will not cause in the danger of the lives of the celebrities. However if the public really wants to see their favourite celebrity or artist, without being a threat to their lives, they could always go to their concert or meet and greet.

PEEL on level test question 1

TECHNOLOGICAL
º Ease of use and convenience

º POINT
The increasing access to information on the internet has created more solutions than problems, especially in the technological field as the ease of obtaining massive amounts of information has made it easier and much more convenient for people to do so.

º EXPLANATION
As more information is available much more easily on the internet, more knowledge is easily accessible at our fingertips. The internet has made the sharing and obtaining of knowledge so much more easy and convenient. The internet has made it so that the information can be obtained at anywhere, at any time. Even if the person who wants information is not living anywhere near a library or a source of information, it is easier and much more convenient for him/ her to obtain the information they need straight from the internet, rather than going the distance all the way to a library, where the information may take another hour or two before it can be found.

º EVIDENCE
A good example to illustrate this point is Google, a search engine that helps users find what they want in a very short amount of time. The ease and convenience of using Google as a search engine to find the information they need is one of the plus points by using the internet. Information obtained through the increasing access of the internet thus is way easier and convenient than running down to the nearest library and then going through a thorough search again to find what the person is looking for by flipping the many pages of the hardcopy research articles.

º LINK-BACK/ WEIGHING
As such, the increasing access to information on the internet is actually more of a boon than a bane. The ease and convenience of the information has led to the internet being one of the most outstanding platform in obtaining information. Being easy to access is also one of its main advantages as users are able to have access it anywhere and at any time.

-VALERY

SOCIO-CULTURAL

POINT
The increasing access to information on the internet has caused as many problems as it has solved.

EXPLANATION
With the increasing usage of the internet, finding information, games and movies without a license off a third party site has became common despite not having the permission from the original owner to distribute them. With people finding it easier and free to get the things they want online, companies making such contents or information will not only lose their commission but also their users. The increasing number of users that are able to pirate easily, the illegal act of downloading original content, has increased greatly causing content producers to be wary about posting information online in an attempt of protecting their content production.

EVIDENCE
A good example to illustrate this point is in January 2012,Megaupload, a file sharing site contained millions of illegal materials, was taken down by the FBI due to copyright infringement claims by owners of said materials. They included musicians and game companies that distributed their products digitally. Before the removal of Megaupload gaming companies were losing thousands of users and commissions causing many to be wary or posting games online.

LINKBACK/WEIGHING
As such, the increasing access to information on the internet is actually more of a band than a boon.Being legal is the only way to way to go in life. The unlawful act of piracy and copyright infringement could only cause content producers to be wary resulting in them stopping their content production. These only causes devastating effects on the users of such content. However, internet users could easily prevent such actions by asking permission of the owner to use their information, purchasing the music and games which would be much effective than the act of piracy and copyright infringement.

-DARSHAN

POLITICAL

POINT

The increasing access to information on the internet has created more solutions than problems especially in the political field where the citizens of the country get to know more about the government.

EXPLANATION

As there are more ways of delivering of information about the country to the citizens of the country, like through Straits times news online or even on pages on Facebook, there is more and easier access information about the government on the internet. As a citizen, he or she should know about their country and what is the government doing to improve the country and what else issues are going on so that they can try to solve the problems. So for all this to happen information and reports from the government have to be shared, which is through newspapers and posts if there is no internet. However, even if these kind of information are limited access to the people, there is a high chance that not many people will about the information. However with the increasing access of information on the internet, citizens of the country can go and check out the information at various websites, which can solve many big problems in the nation as well. Moreover if these kind of information is only available in the hard-copy form, there is a high  chance that people would not bother to go and buy to the book or magazine to read about it.

EVIDENCE

A good example would be the Population White Paper released by the Singapore government, where it can be easily accessed as a online copy on a website called population.sg , where all the views and future plans for Singapore are written. This website can easily accessed by anyone with the link and it is an easy way for the people to learn about the future plans for singapore and adjust according to it and try to improve those plans. For instance it was indicated in the population white paper that the government plans to increase the population from 5 million to 6.9 million people, after it was released may opinions and views about the idea came in and were published on the news as well.

LINKBACK

As such, the increasing access to informaiton in the internet is more of a boon than a bane where citizens of the country can have easy access to information about the government which can cause major changes in the country and also solve many issues in the country.Though there are more problems like hacking or rumors spread due to increasing access to information online, the benefits from the access to information is more than the problems caused because this way of spreading information online, speeds up many processes in the government faster for instance, evacuation alert due to tsunami warning.
